We are a woman-owned and woman-run small press giving voice to shorter pieces of writing. We believe in helping your words take flight.

We founded Cicada Song Press because we believe in new writers. We believe in writers who don’t have the money to pay for self publishing, or to enter the ongoing contests. When all that feels mean and impersonal, we believe in family. Our team of editors work with you to better your piece. We’ll find cover art and work with you on publicity - just like a big publisher - but we’re small.

We do this by allowing more writers chances to see their small pieces published. We publish collections of poems, short stories, flash fiction, micro-fiction and other small forms. We look forward to publishing novellas and pairs or triads of novelettes. We believe in writing that crosses genres and just becomes fun.

Poetry with "reality detonates" somewhere other than the title. Ends November 30.

Reality Detonates

<div>What I like in a novella:</div><div><br></div><div>- a story that carries me away</div><div>- characters who feel real</div><div>- adventure (I was a child in the 70s and 80s. Watch the movies from those years to see what I mean.)</div><div>- genre fiction or mass market fiction (While the literary novella is a wonderful thing, it’s not what I’m looking for.)</div><div>- stories that blend genres</div><div>- (not too many) tropes (unless you plan to subvert them)</div><div>- settings with real atmosphere (Can I taste it?)</div><div>- humor (or at least a sense of humor)</div>

Novella

<div>Submissions from a single author. </div><div><br></div><div>1. Lined poems up to 40 lines.</div><div>2. Prose poems up to 300 words.</div><div><br></div><div>From the editor:</div><div><br></div><div>"I like poems that tell me something about life or nature that I didn't know or only suspected. They can be realistic or speculative, as long as they surprise me. I want to say "Oh, wow!" or "Yes!" by the end.</div><div><br></div><div>I like poems so beautiful they make me cry.</div><div><br></div><div>I don't want work that speaks of cruelty or hatred."</div><div><br></div><div>Email to submit: coming soon.</div>
